The Hedgehog Goes Into Hibernation

Word is out that Stan Van Gundy, Head Coach of the Miami Heat, will resign later today, fueling speculation that Heat President Pat Riley could once again take over behind the bench.

Van Gundy, best known either for being the older brother of fellow NBA Coach Jeff Van Gundy, or as a dead ringer for Porn Star Extraordinaire Ron Jeremy, has had a lot of success since taking over as Head Coach. He led the Heat to a surprising playoff finish two years ago, then after acquiring Shaquille O'Neal in the summer of 2004 brought the Heat within a game of appearing in the NBA Finals this past season. While reports say that Van Gundy will cite 'family reasons' for stepping down, you have to think the 11-10 start to the season has something to do with it. I do hope that's not the real reason. Van Gundy's done a good job with the Heat, and it's not his fault Shaq's missed all but 3 games so far. Plus, it wasn't him who ditched the likes of Damon Jones and Rasual Butler to pursue shoot-first 'role' players like Jason Williams and Antoine Walker.

In any case, things just got a lot more interesting in South Beach. If Riley does make a return to the sidelines, one can only hope that K.C. Jones isn't too far behind.

**UPDATE - 1:33 ET**
Pat Riley is in as the Head Coach
