The King Is Dead, Long Live The King

41-38 Texas, after a Vince Young TD run in the final 30 seconds.

Congrats to the Texas Longhorns, who won a Championship Game that amazingly lived up to its billing. Vince Young had a helluva game, and carried a Texas team that rallied from 12 down to win.

Congrats also to the University of Southern California on a great run of 34 wins and 2 National Championships - they went down fighting like a champ.

Reason #1 of 2006 why College Football is a great sport: the 2006 Rose Bowl. If you didn't catch it, you can order a 15 minute highlight film on iTunes starting tomorrow.

Great post. I am sure that both teams appreciate your congratulations.

Having popped my cherry on college bowl games tonight, let me just say: if that is reason #1 why college football rules, college football has a LOT of problems. Sure, the ending was exciting, but so is the last 3 seconds of the Kentucky Derby. It doesn't mean it is worth watching. The game was sloppy. There were like 30 turnovers, 40 missed kicks from guys who can't kick more than 20 yards, and neither defence had a guy who could make a single tackle. Sure, Young was impressive, but let's see him do that against an NFL defence. Only three players really impressed me: LenDale White, Dwayne Jarrett, and Damon Thomas. Honestly, I bet the Grey Cup was better played than that game.

I'll be damned if I'm gonna sit here and have you slander the Grey Cup.

Like Andy, I watched my first bowl game yesterday. I guess it was exciting, until I found out that Leinart is only taking one class this term - ballroom dancing.

Plus, any football championship that doesn't require heaters on the sideline isn't worth winning.

Does anyone else find that picture just a little too homoerotic? Not that there is anything wrong with that. Not at all.

Sure there were turnovers and some sloppy plays, but that happens in the pro game too. And if you didn't find the game otherwise exciting, Grabia, that's your prerogative. If you want to stick to watching Greg Lewis and Todd Pinkston run crisp 5 yard curl routes all day, and call it good football, then more power to you, but please try offering more tangible critcism rather than hyperbole about a few mistakes the team's made and acting non-plussed about Vince Young's performance. "Let's see him do that against an NFL defense"? By that rationale, there's no reason to be impressed by any performance in amateur sports. Team Canada looked great at the World Juniors? Let's see Justin Pogge do that against NHL competition.

Two things about the kicking. First, the hashmarks in the college game are much wider than in the NFL, and I've always assumed that they are harder to kick off of. (Maybe The Armchair Kicker can weigh in on that). Second, neither of these guys are worse than Kris Brown, who somehow still has a job in the NFL.

Hey Abboud,

How did Notre Dame do in their Bowl Game?

Fantastic! They weren't completely embarrassed, which is an improvement over the Bob Davie and Tyrone Willingham eras. Baby steps my friend.
