Iron Mike Between The Pipes
What is the big deal about the Ray Emery/Mike Tyson mask? I don't understand why people are upset, all things considered. I thought we had long ago given up on judging athletes and entertainers for their misdeeds. Don't the names Doug Gilmour, Dino Ciccarelli, Ed Belfour or even Craig MacTavish ring a bell? People still cheer for them. Hell, three of them will probably end up in the Hall of Fame (which will continue to screw over Glenn Anderson, but I digress). And that only covers athletes from hockey. Take a look at the NFL All-Criminal team. Forgive me for pulling a Scoop Jackson here, but is this a race thing?

I don't think it's a race thing, but rather a matter of the quality of athlete emblazoned upon the mask in question. If Emery had a pic of Ray Lewis on his lid, no one would criticize him for it. People feel they can dwell on Tyson's dark past because he has destroyed his career as a boxer and any accomplishments he may have.
Any celebrity, athlete or otherwise leaves themselves vulnerable to trashing if they are not viewed as having a successful career or one that was in grave decline by the time they retired. As long as Danny Heatley doesn't become a freak and tattoo his face, the death of Dan Schneider will remain a footnote in his career.
I think Emery should paint a picture of the Juice giving the finger on his new mask.
That is true. If Tyson was still champ, no one would say a word. Now that he is a step away from doing a Master P. on "Dancing With The Stars", people want to get all over him.
Speaking of, how come none of us have ridiculed the once great Jerry Rice for his appearance on that show? Good God, the man just doesn't know when to walk away.
