Javy To The Rescue!

The Red Sox are on the verge of acquiring Javy Lopez, who surprisingly made it through the waiver wire to Boston. The need for a starting catcher arose just after the non-waiver trade deadline, when Jason Varitek injured his knee, requiring surgery and putting him on the shelf for 4-6 weeks.

This is a good move on two fronts, so long as the Sox don't give up any major prospects. First, the thought of Doug Mirabelli catching every day for the next six weeks was making me ill. Second, Lopez gives a boost to the Red Sox offense, and even when the captain returns, can fill in at DH (if Papi plays first) and off the bench. With their rotation still struggling with injuries, and Varitek and Nixon sidelined, they need all the help they can get to keep pace with the surging New York Yankees. Go Sox.

Friday Update: The Orioles will receive a player to be named later, which is fine by me. Good move for the Sox, I say.
