Instant Nostalgia

As the regular season winds down in baseball fantasy leagues, I thought it would be interesting to take a look back at the players who dominated the scoring each week.

Below are the weekly point leaders from the Alberta Baseball Confederacy, our mixed-league head-to-head point league. With his three homeruns in the first-half of Sunday's doubleheader, Ryan Howard set a new single-week record with 62 points. Although he's been dominant for long stretches this season, it's Howard's first appearance at the top of the weekly list.

Over the first 22 weeks of the 23 week season, five players have won the honours twice: Carlos Beltran, Jermaine Dye, Johnny Damon, Albert Pujols and Jose Reyes.

Three times the weekly leader was a free agent. Breakout weeks by Jose Castillo, Mark DeRosa and Orlando Hudson were unanticipated by ABC owners. And in a few cases, such as Chris Shelton’s big first week performance (now a distant memory), the player was reserved by his owner and did not count in the scoring.

It's a bit of instant nostalgia to see Chris Shelton's name on the list. And owners of Jason Bay, whose 61 points in week eight set the pace for much of the season, must be lamenting the slugger’s point distribution. He ranks 17th among outfielders for total scoring, but has topped 20 points only three times in the past 12 weeks.

I'm proud to say I'm only on that list once. I'll take an even distribution instead.

In weeks 9 and 18, when free agents led the scoring, the leaders among owned-players were Ortiz (40 pts, week 18) and Sizemore (37 points, week 9).

If Ortiz had appeared on the list a couple of more times, I think we'd all agree it was really clutch of him.
